What is beauty for science?
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, that beauty is in the skin or a feeling. In science, the most objective view of beauty is based on the Golden Ratio to measure it. The golden ratio, often expressed by the Greek letter phi (φ), is a mathematical constant approximately equal to 1.6180339887. The most beautiful people are those who have balanced features around their eyes, cheeks, and mouth. These features should follow the golden ratio for perfect symmetry.
The golden ratio is not just a mathematical curiosity. Spiral galaxies and their arms often show patterns similar to the Golden Ratio, which occurs naturally in many cases, including astronomy.
Let’s keep in mind that, from an evolutionary perspective, beauty is fundamentally linked to reproductive success. Attractive traits often indicate health, fertility, or positive genetic qualities, thus increasing the likelihood of successful breeding. Scientists suggest symmetrical faces are more attractive because they indicate stable development and good health.
